The concept is simple: a Spanish-speaking driver accompanies you during your private transfers from one destination to the next. Stops can be arranged along the way according to your preferences: a local lunch, a scenic overlook, a sightseeing stop, or a rest break.
There are two types of private transportation:
1. Driver for Transfers Only
The driver provides transportation only between your various stops.
This option is particularly popular with travelers who want to change accommodations while maintaining a certain degree of independence once they arrive at their destination.
For example, many families choose this option before ending their trip in a private villa or a beachfront home. The driver assists with transportation between stops, but once settled in, travelers are free to enjoy their stay without needing daily transportation.

Renting a Car in the Dominican Republic: A Way to Enjoy Independence and Freedom
Yes, it’s entirely possible to take a road trip in the Dominican Republic.
It’s actually the most economical way to explore the country at your own pace.
The main road network is generally very good, particularly along the major routes connecting Santo Domingo, Constanza, Jarabacoa, Samaná, Cabrera, Bayahibe, Las Terrenas, Punta Cana, and Puerto Plata.
At Terra Dominicana, however, we almost always recommend a 4×2 or 4×4 SUV. Even though the main roads are good, many of the boutique hotels, ecolodges, and experiences we select sometimes require driving on dirt roads or secondary routes.

However, we’re upfront about this: if the Dominican Republic is your first trip to Latin America, we don’t necessarily recommend a self-drive tour.

Santo Domingo, in particular, is not a city we recommend for starting out as a driver in the country. Fortunately, by staying in the colonial district, you’ll get around mainly on foot. You’ll pick up your rental car once you leave the capital.
