There are four travel options in the Dominican Republic. Small-group tours are ideal for solo travelers and those on a budget, with departures on fixed dates. All-inclusive packages are designed for a relaxing beach vacation at a single resort. Day trips are a great way to supplement an already booked vacation. A private tour remains the most flexible option for exploring several regions at your own pace. The deciding factor isn’t the price, but the degree of freedom you desire.
The Dominican Republic lends itself to a wide variety of travel experiences. The country comprises seven regions, more than six international airports, and reasonable travel distances. Santo Domingo is about a two-hour drive from Punta Cana. This accessibility opens up a wide range of options, from a stationary beachfront stay to a comprehensive tour.
The choice depends on four factors: your desired level of independence, the size of your group, the number of regions you’ll visit, and the flexibility of your dates. This guide compares the four main options and indicates which one suits which type of traveler.
The Comparison at a Glance
| Criterion | Small group | All-inclusive | Day trips | Private tour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dates | Fixed, scheduled departures | Flexible | Flexible | Flexible |
| Group size | Small group | Variable, large-capacity hotel | Private or shared, depending on the activity | Just you |
| Regions covered | Several, predefined itinerary | A single base | Radius around your lodging | As much as you’d like |
| Program flexibility | Low, fixed itinerary | None outside of excursions | High, on a per-activity basis | Total |
| Budget per person | Included and announced in advance | Fixed package price; extras charged separately | On a case-by-case basis | Tailored to your preferences |
| Local encounters | Good, with a dedicated English-speaking guide | Limited to the hotel grounds | Varies by service provider | High if the itinerary includes them |
| Typical Profile | Solo travelers, first-time visitors, on a tight budget | Pure relaxation, families with very young children | Trip already booked, owners on-site | Couples, families, groups of friends, discerning travelers |
1. Small-group tours
This package features a pre-planned itinerary and fixed departure dates. You’ll join a small group accompanied by an English-speaking guide throughout the trip.
What this package offers
- A fixed price known at the time of booking, with transportation, accommodations, and main activities included.
- All logistics are handled for you—no need to drive or plan your route.
- A group experience, particularly well-suited for solo travelers.
- Coverage of multiple regions in a single trip, with no organizational hassle.
Its limitations
Dates are non-negotiable. Neither is the itinerary: if you prefer a particular stop, you won’t be able to extend your stay there. The pace is set by the group, which requires some flexibility regarding morning departure times.
Who it’s for
Solo travelers looking to share the experience, first-time visitors to the destination, people who prefer a set itinerary, and those with tight budgets. This option also works well for couples who enjoy group travel.
Terra Dominicana offers two itineraries of this type. The 12-day “A Different Side of the Island” tour has scheduled departures in 2026. The 10-day diving tour is available in small groups or as a private tour. The full range of options is listed on the small-group travel page.
2. All-Inclusive Resort Vacations
The concept is simple: a hotel, a package deal, meals and drinks included, and a beach. The Dominican Republic offers a wide range of options based on this model, concentrated mainly around Punta Cana, Bávaro, and Bayahibe.
What this package offers
- Costs are controlled and known before departure, with no need to make daily decisions.
- No logistics to worry about: airport transfers, accommodations, and meals are all included.
- Facilities suited for young children: pools, kids’ clubs, and all-day dining.
- Complete relaxation for a short stay of one week or less.
Its limitations
You’ll only see a small part of the country. Local life takes place outside the hotel grounds. For a first visit, this package leaves out the Central Cordillera, the Southwest, and the Samaná Peninsula.
Who it’s for
Pure relaxation getaways, families with young children, short trips, and travelers seeking above all the beach and hotel comfort.

3. Day Trips
This package isn’t a replacement for a vacation—it’s a supplement to it. You already have accommodations—whether at a resort, in a rental, or in your own home—and you can add à la carte excursions.
What this option offers
- Total freedom: you book one day at a time, depending on the weather and what you feel like doing.
- A choice between private and shared tours, which significantly affects the price.
- Access to sites that are difficult to reach on your own, such as the coves in Samaná Bay, which are accessible only by boat.
- Budget flexibility, with no commitment to a fixed package price.
Its limitations
The range of travel is limited by travel times. From Punta Cana, trying to reach the southwest in a single day isn’t practical. Quality varies greatly depending on the service provider, which is why it’s best to go through a team that has vetted the providers.
Who it’s for
Travelers who already have accommodations, owners of a vacation home in the area, beach vacationers looking to spice up their stay with new experiences, expats, and residents.
The activity guide lists excursions by theme: waterfalls and lagoons, diving and snorkeling, national parks, and catamaran trips.
4. The Customized Private Tour
The itinerary starts with a blank page. You provide your dates, budget, preferred pace, and areas of interest. The agency designs the itinerary, books services directly with Dominican providers, and sends you a detailed travel itinerary.
What this package offers
- An itinerary tailored to your priorities: three extra nights in Samaná if you’re drawn to the beach, or a stop in the mountains if you want to take a breather.
- Completely flexible dates, even outside peak seasons.
- A selection of accommodations at various price points, from family-run guesthouses to charming ecolodges.
- Drive yourself or with a chauffeur, depending on your preference for getting behind the wheel.
- Experiences built into the itinerary: meals at local homes, cocoa farms, craft workshops, and cigar factories.
Limitations
The itinerary requires prior consultation, so you’ll need to discuss details with the agency in advance. The budget varies depending on your choices (private guides, accommodations, transportation). Two travelers on the same trip may receive very different quotes depending on the level of accommodations selected.
Who It’s For
Couples, families with independent children, groups of friends, travelers returning to the destination, long stays of two weeks or more, and specific themed trips.
Which trip is right for which profile?
| Your Profile | Recommended Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You’re traveling alone | Small group | Group experience with shared costs for transportation and the guide. |
| Couple, first visit | Private tour or small group | A private tour lets you alternate between the beach, cultural sites, and the mountains at your own pace. |
| Family with children under 5 | All-inclusive or short tour | Limited travel and amenities suited for toddlers. |
| Families with children ages 6 and older | Private tour | Waterfalls, ranch visits, river swimming, and local encounters—at your own pace. |
| Honeymoon | Luxury private tour | Curated accommodations and carefully planned stops for two. |
| Divers | Themed Tour | Sites in the Southeast and along the North Coast visited in the right order. |
| Hikers and nature lovers | Adventure tour | Central Mountain Range, national parks, and the ascent of Pico Duarte. |
| Birdwatchers | Themed Tour | Observation points and specialized guides in the Sierra de Bahoruco. |
| Stays of less than a week | All-inclusive with excursions | Travel time would take up too much of your stay. |
| You own a villa in the area | Day trips | You stay at your base and add guided outings. |
| Group of friends (6–10 people) | Private tour | The cost per person goes down, and you remain in control of the itinerary. |

Three Questions to Consider Before Making a Choice
How long will you be gone?
For trips under seven days, stick to one or two bases. For trips between eight and twelve days, you can comfortably combine two to three regions. For trips longer than fifteen days, a complete cross-country trip—including the mountains—becomes a realistic option.
Do you want to drive?
The main roads are paved, and driving is generally easy. A vehicle with sufficient ground clearance is useful for the dirt roads in the Southwest and the Central Cordillera. If driving isn’t your thing, a chauffeur-driven option or a guided tour is a great alternative.
When are you planning to visit?
From December through April, the climate is drier and tourist traffic is heavier. Humpback whales pass through Samaná between January and March. The “When to Go” page details seasonal variations region by region.

How Working with a Local Agency Makes a Difference
No matter which package you choose, the point of contact matters. Terra Dominicana is an inbound travel agency based in Santo Domingo. The team lives on-site, inspects accommodations before recommending them, and contracts directly with Dominican service providers.
In practical terms, this means three things: Your questions are answered based on recent site visits; no markup is added to the service rates; and in the event of any issues on-site, the team that booked the service steps in directly, during your time zone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which option should I choose for my first visit to the Dominican Republic?
A private tour or a small-group tour. Both allow you to explore several regions and venture beyond a single beach resort, giving you a representative view of the country.
How many people are in a small-group tour?
Terra Dominicana’ssmall-grouptours feature a limited numberof participants, with a English-speaking guide accompanying the group throughout the trip.
Can you combine an all-inclusive stay with a tour?
Yes. A common option is to tour the country for about ten days, then spend a few nights by the sea before your return flight.
Is a custom tour necessarily more expensive?
No. The cost depends on the level of accommodations, the mode of transportation, and the number of guided activities. For equivalent services, booking directly with local providers avoids successive resale markups.
Can we book just day trips?
Yes. The agency organizes à la carte excursions, including for travelers who already have accommodations or a base in the area.
Should we rent a car or hire a driver?
Both options are available on private tours. Renting a car is best for travelers who are comfortable driving. Hiring a driver takes the logistics off your hands and lets you enjoy the scenery.
What’s the best option for a family trip?
With young children, staying at a single base minimizes travel time. For children ages six and up, a private tour opens up access to waterfalls, ranches, and river swimming without being constrained by a group’s schedule.
How long does it take to receive a proposal?
Our travel designers will respondwithin48 hours with an initial personalized itinerary proposal.
In summary
There is no single “best” option in absolute terms. Small group tours offer budget and logistical security. All-inclusive packages meet the need for relaxation on a short trip. Day trips enrich an already structured itinerary. Private tours offer the greatest flexibility to create a trip that suits you.
So the right question isn’t about price, but rather the level of freedom you’re looking for and the number of regions you want to explore. Discuss these two factors with a local travel advisor, and the path forward will become clear.
